Glaciers are among the many most conspicuous and dynamic geologic features on Mount Rainier. They erode the volcanic cone and are necessary sources of streamflow for several rivers, including some that present water for hydroelectric energy and irrigation.
Salmon and trout species use the rivers shaped by the glaciers, and although the lakes stopped being stocked in 1972, thirty lakes still have reproducing populations. In addition to climbing, climbing, backcountry snowboarding, photography, and tenting are well-liked activities within the park.
